A Drink: Rock Shandy

One of the problems with not drinking is that the alternatives are so poor.  Water is good as far as it goes, but well, it’s just water.  Fruit juices are off limits, but even if they weren’t there’s only so much orange juice you can drink without vodka in it.  And then most of the soft drinks out there still taste like they were designed for kids, even the posh overpriced ones.

To come even remotely close to the dry taste of a proper drink, and for something you could happily drink a few of over a whole evening, then try making ‘Rock Shandy’  It’s a non-alcoholic shandy, which, if made with no-calorie drinks, provides the best non-alcoholic, diet friendly alternative that you are going to find.  And the ingredients are so simple you can even order most of them in a pub.  Angostura bitters give it a more interesting taste and just the tiniest hint of alcohol.

Lemonade Rock Shandy

Take half a glass of zero-cal lemonade, add ice and a few dashes of Angostura bitters then top up with sparkling water.  Stir.

Orangeade Rock Shandy

Take half a glass of zero-cal orangeade, add ice and a few dashes of Angostura bitters then top up with sparkling water.  Stir.

Tea Rock Shandy

Take half a glass of iced tea.  (that’s natural unsweetened cold tea which you can make by cooling a small portion of very strong dark tea with lots of ice and a fridge, or by steeping cold water with tea and leaving in a glass jar in the sun for a while.).  Add ice, top up with zero-cal lemonade and a few dashes of Angostura bitters.  Stir.

Ginger Ale Rock Shandy

Take half a glass of zero-cal ginger ale (ginger beer is fine too – but harder to find as a low cal).  Add ice, top up with zero-cal lemonade and a few dashes of Angostura bitters.  Stir.

WILL's Rock Shandy

Put a handful of ice into a pint glass.  Add one third zero cal ginger ale, one third plain ice tea and one third zero cal lemonade.  Add a few dashes of Angostura bitters.  Stir.

Cheers!
